Hilton Grand Vacations
This division of Hilton Hotels developed a SQL Server application to run their vacation time-share business. It worked so well that corporate headquarters asked them to roll it out to other Hilton divisions. Before opening the application to far more users than it was designed to support, they needed to be sure the application would scale up to the expected load. ...click for more

US Auto Parts
This successful internet marketer has over 12,000,000 visitors to their website annually. Like many ecommerce success stories, rapid growth strained the limits of their existing SQL Server-based applications. ...click for more

US Dept of Agriculture
For years, the USDA used a SQL Server based application to handle contract management for their Agricultural Research Service. Recently they expanded its use to many other offices. When the number of users jumped from a few dozen to several hundred, performance quickly deteriorated. Realizing that the issues were more complex than could be addressed by standard database tuning techniques, agency IT management decided that they needed outside expertise.

Is Your Java Middleware Hurting SQL Server Performance?
This article covers a serious issue with drivers used to connect Java applications to SQL Server 2000. Using the default settings for these drivers can have devastating consequences for SQL Server performance. The issue is not well-known but it is easily corrected using the information here .

What the IT Decision-Maker Needs to Know About SQL Server Performance Tuning (i.e. Are production applications running slow?)
Published a few months earlier, also by SQL Server Performance.com, this article by Don Henderson is an overview of the issues surrounding SQL Server performance tuning. Written specifically for IT executives and managers, it is not overly technical. It is designed to give the IT decision-maker the background information he or she needs to evaluate SQL Server performance tuning options.

Should You Plan an Early Migration to SQL Server 2005?

Early adoption of any upgrade to a critical system always involves a measure of risk. If you don’t have an immediate need for any of the new features provided by SQL Server 2005, it might be better to wait and benefit from the experience of early adopters.

However, there are many scenarios that might justify early adoption. The most obvious of these would be if you have an immediate need to improve performance or availability in a very large database (VLDB) environment. Microsoft has implemented important improvements to the database engine in this area: e.g. support of native 64 bit computing and enormous amounts of memory, data partitioning, etc. All of Microsoft's marketing hype aside, these are important, fundamental improvements that will allow SQL Server to equal or exceed the performance of the largest UNIX database installations.

For the same reasons, if you are planning a hardware upgrade to your existing SQL Server environment, you should consider whether you want to lock yourself into the 32-bit world until your next technology refresh or undertake a combined upgrade to 64-bit hardware and to SQL Server 2005, 64 bit edition.
